Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses do the AI thing without a projector or subscription
The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have been something of a pleasant surprise. They make videos, take photos, livestream and act as an adequate replacement for headphones, all while looking like a normal pair of sunglasses. However, everyone's been waiting for the addition of multimodal AI after early access testing began in January. What is multimodal AI? Simply put, it's a toolset that allows an AI assistant to process multiple types of information, including photos, videos, text and audio. It's an AI that can view and understand the world around you in real time.
(Un)making AI Magic: a Design Taxonomy
Lupetti, Maria Luce, Murray-Rust, Dave
This paper examines the role that enchantment plays in the design of AI things by constructing a taxonomy of design approaches that increase or decrease the perception of magic and enchantment. We start from the design discourse surrounding recent developments in AI technologies, highlighting specific interaction qualities such as algorithmic uncertainties and errors and articulating relations to the rhetoric of magic and supernatural thinking. Through analyzing and reflecting upon 52 students' design projects from two editions of a Master course in design and AI, we identify seven design principles and unpack the effects of each in terms of enchantment and disenchantment. We conclude by articulating ways in which this taxonomy can be approached and appropriated by design/HCI practitioners, especially to support exploration and reflexivity.

Why text-to-video may be the next 'big' AI thing - Times of India
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expanding beyond text-to-image models, with the emergence of text-to-video. Runway's Gen-2 model and Google's Imagen Video and Phenaki models create videos based on text prompts, but the challenge lies in achieving precision and avoiding fake or misleading videos. Ethical challenges also arise, as AI-generated videos could be used for deception via the creation of deepfakes. However, with Big Tech already involved in the development of text-to-video models, it may not be long before this technology becomes mainstream. When it comes to generative AI, there's only one thing dominating the headlines -- ChatGPT.
Memo to CEOs from a former Morgan Stanley analyst: how seriously are you taking this AI thing? -- Sonder Scheme
But, 58% of businesses say that less than 10% of their company's digital budget goes towards AI. So, it's not surprising that only 15% of AI projects succeed. This disconnect comes as no surprise to us. I was an analyst at Morgan Stanley and earned my technology stripes (and scars) at Apple under Steve Jobs, while my partner and wife, Helen, is a former CIO and corporate venture capitalist. We know the hallmarks of innovation window-dressing and transformation-by-outsourcing.
